Etymology

Prionoxystus: Combines the Greek words prion meaning “saw,” and xystus meaning “polished,” or “scraped.”

Overview

Prionoxystus is a New World genus of moths with only three recognized species. The Little Carpenterworm Moth (Prionoxystus macmurtrei) and the Carpenterworm Moth (Prionoxystus robiniae) are both found in Indiana. The third species, Baccharis Carpenterworm Moth (Prionoxystus piger) is endemic to Cuba and the Florida Keys.
